Started in 1986 with a ever changing line up, centred around Shaun Robert. Since there have been many times of inactiivity, while other side projects, and lots of recordings have been lost down the years. Various members joined and left, lots of tapes of unlistenable noise were made, sold or given away, only to be played once, and mostly for only a few seconds. There's a story that a party in the late eighties was ruined by a Mutant Beatniks album being accidently selected from a pile of cassettes. From the years of not self editing, a open space arrived, and in this clearing was a sound set without ego.The Mutant Beatniks was started with the idea to produce short form pieces of Music Concrete, Noise Music with an edge towards outsider pop and breakbeat. Several albums were produced, copies of which did not really circulate much. After a few years it all went silent, until 1995 with Shampoo Boots, then after another gap: 2001, when they started again as a trio, again some material was recorded, most of it was lost. It was only really recently (2006) that material has been produced on a regular basis. Reforming with With William Strong and Upstairs, to produce the (2008) Animal Farm album, after William Strong left to start his Public Domain project, with the two library girls Jane and Doris. Tool joined and the next two albums Fountain and Blazen were produced as a Trio. Both Upstairs and Tool left, and Dennis Ward joined, famous in pen tapping circles in Cornwall, brought his marakilous device to the for, and screaming and shouting were processed into sweeps of soundwave by Shaun Robert, to produce the (2010) TRANGRESSION album, a duo of Dennis Ward: percussion, mashed up cassette tapes, screams and bangs. Shaun Robert: samples, keyboards, vocals and mixing. DennisWard then left saying he'd make his famous pen tapping classic.Becoming a trio with Victoria Clark and Frank Wright, making the (2011) albums ATLAS and abstract. Then a five piece, with Mark Benson And George Out...... not forgetting the wonderful invisible album, made with Shaun Robert at the for, a soundtrack, concrete radio play made with Mark Benson.That's about as clear as you'd want, other collaborators could be listed, but who wants an endless list of names ? The name is derived from the idea of future music, Mutant as in transfigured and morphing developed distance sounds; Music. And the kind of music, crazy modern beatniks will listen to. So Mutant Beatniks describes the music as well as the target audience.
